On Location

On-Set Production Across New Zealand

Here is how this works in practice. Our production crews operate across New Zealand's full range of environments β€” from Wellington's Te Aro studios and Auckland's North Shore soundstages to the high-altitude plateaus of Tongariro and the coastal light of the Bay of Islands. Whether your project demands a compact single-camera unit or a fully crewed multi-department production, our teams bring the tech precision and on-set efficiency that global and local clients expect. We set up logistics, unit bases, and travel for productions throughout both islands, keeping schedules tight no matter location tangle.

Crews sized to the project, not a template β€” nimble enough for Coromandel run-and-gun, technical enough for Weta-grade feature work.

Here is the short of it. Camera & Cinematography services range from handheld doc work to precision Steadicam & Gimbal Operation for narrative drama. Our Gaffers & Lighting Team manages HMI and LED packages for both controlled studio environments and the challenging natural light conditions found on New Zealand's West Coast and in Fiordland. For productions needing elevated perspectives, our Drone Videography operators hold today's Civil Aviation Authority approvals and have flown above Milford Sound, Lake Tekapo, and the Queenstown basin. Multi-Camera Shoots are ready for live events, reality formats, and broadcast sport across the country.

FAQs

Production FAQs

Common questions about our production services, crew availability, and equipment support.

What crew sizes can you provide for productions in New Zealand?

The production team handles projects which range from two-person documentary production to 150-person feature unit operations. The typical range for commercial production shoots includes 15 to 30 personnel who consist of a DP and camera team and gaffer with two electrics and key grip with a swing and sound mixer and boom op and additional staff from art department and HMU. We've crewed up Netflix series with full New Zealand units and handled single-day corporate interviews with just a shooter and audio. The network scales to fit.

How quickly can you mobilize a crew in New Zealand?

Auckland-based crew can often mobilize within 24–48 hours for urgent jobsβ€”we've pulled together same-day news crews when stories break. Regional shoots need more runway; figure 5–7 days minimum for locations outside major cities. The real constraint is usually equipment availability from rental houses, not crew. If you're planning ahead, 2–3 weeks gives us time to assemble the right team rather than just the available one.

Do your crews speak English?

The department heads who include DPs and gaffers and sound mixers and 1st ADs possess English fluency and have worked on productions outside their home country. That's a baseline requirement for our network. Grips, electrics, and PAs vary, but we always ensure someone on each team can translate. For fully New Zealand-speaking shoots, we have native crews across every department.

Can you provide equipment along with crew?

We work with Rubber Monkey, Panavision NZ, ARRI Media NZ, and other New Zealand rental houses daily. The majority of equipment packages include crew members who stay with their assigned positions because the gaffer operates from their preferred lighting location and the DP selects the camera equipment. Our company takes care of customs procedures and carnet documentation for international productions which choose to bring their own equipment. The delivery of equipment brings tested and prepared equipment to the site; we begin our work.'t send gear to set without a checkout.

How do New Zealand crew rates compare to other countries?

New Zealand rates are competitive within the Asia-Pacific region and generally below UK and US levels. Employment costs include KiwiSaver contributions and ACC levies which are factored into day rates. We quote all-in costs so there are no surprises. For longer shoots, the NZSPG can offset 20-25% of qualifying New Zealand spend, which makes New Zealand highly competitive for international productions.
