Communication Systems

Professional on-set communication equipment keeping your production coordinated and running smoothly.

Scroll

Here is how this works in practice. Production comms kit keep departments set up across sets, stages, and remote locations. Pro intercom systems, walkie-talkies, and wireless comms networks enable real-time planning between directors, assistant directors, camera, sound, and production management across the shooting day.

Here is the short of it. We give and configure comms kit packages scaled to your production's crew size and location complexity. Our team handles channel planning, gear distribution, and tech setup so your departments can communicate reliably from the first call to wrap each day.

Production Comms Across Auckland, Wellington & Remote NZ Locations

Here is how this works in practice. Production communications across Aotearoa run on a domestic backbone of Motorola digital fleets staged out of TVNZ, Sky NZ, and the Wellywood gear pool at Stone Street Studios, Park Road Post, and Weta FX Miramar, supplemented by Tait Communications hardware built locally in Christchurch and shipped worldwide from there. We set up channel planning across Spark NZ, One NZ, and 2degrees cellular fallback, with 5G now standard in Auckland CBD, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown but thinning to LTE-only across the Coromandel, Mackenzie Country, and Fiordland — where we layer Iridium satellite handsets for crew check-ins. Frequency licensing flows through Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) under the Telecommunications Act. We file short-term production permits for analog and digital fleets so directors, ADs, sound, camera, and grip can talk without trouble on any registered location. For drone-augmented shoots we stack the comms plan against CAA NZ Part 102 commercial operator certificates so pilot, observer, and AD share a dedicated channel.

Here is the short of it. For Wellywood-scale features the standard package now mirrors the LOTR and Rings of Power deployments out of Stone Street Studios. Clear-Com Eclipse intercom matrices wired to video village, Riedel Bolero wireless beltpacks across the floor, and Motorola APX fleet radios bridged to second-unit and aerial helicopter teams flying with Heliworks Queenstown or Helipro. Cross-border supplements through Sydney arrive in three hours on Air New Zealand or Qantas freight when we need extra Bolero antennas, IFB packs, or specialty surveillance earpieces for executive producer feeds. On iwi-administered or DOC-permitted shoots we adjust channel etiquette to respect karakia and tapu boundaries, briefing imported crews on Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership protocol and basic te reo Māori radio calls (kia ora, mā te wā) so the comms layer reads as locally fluent rather than imposed.

FAQ

Production Communication Expertise

What communication systems do you provide?

Here is the breakdown. We supply complete communication solutions including two-way radios (Motorola digital and analog), production headsets, Clear-Com and Riedel intercom systems, IFB feeds for talent, and specialty planning systems. Gear ranges from basic walkie-talkies to full broadcast intercom installations.

How many radios do I need for my production?

Radio needs depend on crew size and production complexity. Typical feature shoots need 30-80 radios covering all departments. We help check your needs and recommend appropriate quantities with backup units. We can add gear as needed during production.

Can you provide coverage in remote locations?

Yes, we design systems for challenging locations using repeaters, long-range gear, and multi-site planning. We survey locations in advance when possible to identify coverage challenges and deploy appropriate solutions.

Do you handle frequency licensing in New Zealand?

We set up all frequency licensing needs with Radio Spectrum Management. This has short-term production licenses, frequency planning, and compliance records. Lead time differs by location and range availability.

What about intercom systems for video village?

We give complete video village communication including director-to-set comms, camera talkback, script supervisor links, and department planning. Systems can integrate with wireless video for full tracking and communication.

How do you handle equipment for multiple units?

For multi-unit shoots, we design set up communication plans with separate channels per unit, shared frequencies for key staff, and cross-unit planning skills. Each unit receives complete gear packages.

Productions in New Zealand that need this often pair it with Lighting Equipment Rental, Data Management Systems, and Monitoring Equipment Rental for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Wireless Microphone Systems and Monitor & Video Village.
