Film production in New Zealand

Why Film in New Zealand?

New Zealand offers an extraordinary variety of filming locations—from dramatic fjords and volcanic landscapes to cosmopolitan cityscapes, snow-capped mountains, rolling farmland, and pristine coastlines. Iconic locations include Milford Sound, Hobbiton, and the Sky Tower, among the most sought-after filming sites in the world.

A rich mix of geography, culture, and infrastructure makes New Zealand one of the industry's most versatile destinations. Strong incentives and advanced facilities support productions of every scale.

Dramatic Landscapes

Milford Sound, Tongariro National Park, Mount Cook, and the Southern Alps deliver epic scenery for prestige productions.

Coastal Paradise

Pacific and Tasman coastlines, Bay of Islands, and Coromandel Peninsula provide waterfronts and dramatic seascapes for luxury shoots.

Modern Cities

Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown, Rotorua, and Christchurch offer contemporary architecture and vibrant street life.

Diverse Environments

Southern Alps, Waikato farmland, and Otago vineyards deliver multiple looks within easy reach of world-class transport.

Incentives and Rebates for Filmmakers

New Zealand delivers exceptional value as your filming destination through established locations, experienced crews, and comprehensive financial incentives. Government-backed rebate programs reduce operational costs across feature films, television, and commercial content.

You gain immediate budget relief through structured rebate systems for domestic and international productions, keeping creative vision intact while optimising spend.

New Zealand Screen Production Rebate (NZSPR)

The New Zealand Screen Production Rebate (NZSPR) The NZSPR for International Productions (formerly NZSPG) delivers a 20% cash rebate on qualifying New Zealand production expenditure (QNZPE), with an additional 5% uplift available for eligible projects. From 1 January 2026 the feature film minimum spend threshold was lowered from NZ$15 million to NZ$4 million, and the 5% uplift threshold reduced from NZ$30 million to NZ$20 million.

Eligibility and Application Process

International productions must register with the NZFC before principal photography begins, with a three-stage process: registration, provisional certification (optional for base rebate, mandatory for 5% uplift), and final certification within six months of completion with an independent auditor's report. Partnering with experienced New Zealand production services keeps submissions compliant and on schedule.

Additional Regional Incentives

We combine national NZSPR rebates with targeted regional programs, including council-backed filming incentives and regional film office support. Strategic planning aligns locations with financial objectives for maximum budget impact.

Visa Requirements for Film Crews

New Zealand has specific visa categories for film production crews. The Entertainers Work Visa is the standard pathway for international cast and crew. Visa type depends on length of stay and project scope; we plan applications early to keep approvals on time.

Visa Waiver Countries & NZeTA

Citizens of visa waiver countries (UK, US, EU, etc.) can enter New Zealand for scouting and short business visits without a visa, but must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before travel. An NZeTA is valid for two years (five years for crew members).

Entertainers Work Visa

Cast and crew working on film, television, or video productions in New Zealand apply for an Entertainers Work Visa. For productions over 14 days, a Letter of Non-Objection (LONO) from The Screen Guild is typically required. Allow up to three weeks for processing.

Australian Citizens

Australian citizens can live and work in New Zealand without a visa under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement.
