Director of Photography Services
Experienced DPs for film, TV, commercials, and documentaries throughout New Zealand.
A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. New Zealand's breathtaking landscapes — from Fiordland to the volcanic Central Plateau — gained global recognition through The Lord of the Rings, while DPs like Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC established the visual standard for filming in the country's extraordinary natural environment.
We connect you with experienced Directors of Photography who understand both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting at Stone Street Studios in Wellington or on location in the Southern Alps, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility, supported by the NZFC (New Zealand Film Commission) grant and incentive programs.

DP Talent Anchored in Aotearoa's Visual Heritage
Here is how this works in practice. Our DP roster in New Zealand spans senior cinematographers with global features credits and emerging DPs trained on local features and TVNZ TV series. Auckland-based DPs typically operate ARRI Alexa Mini LF and Sony Venice 2 packages out of Kumeu Film Studios or Auckland Film Studios, while Wellington shooters work the Stone Street / Park Road Post corridor and are accustomed to LOTR-scale wilderness logistics from Kaitoke (Rivendell) to Putangirua Pinnacles (Paths of the Dead).
Here is how this works in practice. South Island DPs based in Queenstown and Wanaka regularly cover Fiordland, Aoraki/Mount Cook, and Glenorchy with helicopter-supported aerial units. We match DPs against your reference reel, format (anamorphic, large-format, 48 fps HFR), and shoot window — from Mackenzie Country's UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve astrophotography to West Coast glacier work where Te Wāhipounamu UNESCO permitting and DOC compliance shape every camera position.
Here is the short of it. The cinematography heritage shaping our DPs runs deep: Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC's Best Cinematography Oscar for The Fellowship of the Ring set the visual benchmark for filming Aotearoa's wilderness, Stuart Dryburgh's Piano (Karekare Beach) established the country's monsoonal coastal palette, and Ari Wegner's Power of the Dog Oscar-nominated work renewed the South Island's high-country language. James Cameron's Avatar Way of Water production at Kumeu and Manukau, plus the Rings of Power Amazon series based in Auckland, has dramatically grown the working DP pool. We set up NZSPG 20% + 5% productivity uplift records through the New Zealand Film Commission (Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga), liaise with Screen Auckland, Screen Wellington, ChristchurchNZ Film, and Film Otago Southland on permits, and handle iwi/hapū consultation where Te Tiriti partnership duties apply to filming on ancestral lands.
FAQ
Our DP Network
What experience levels of DPs do you provide?
We offer DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and international broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project requirements.
How do you match DPs to projects?
We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.
What camera systems do your DPs work with?
Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production requirements and rental availability.
Do DPs come with their own equipment?
Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented equipment. We coordinate equipment sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-provided equipment.
Can you provide international DPs for shoots in New Zealand?
Yes. We can source international DPs for shoots in New Zealand, handling work permits and logistics. We also provide New Zealand DPs for international productions requiring local cinematography talent abroad.
What's included in DP day rates?
Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is typically billed separately. Equipment, camera assistants, and overtime are additional based on project scope.
