SCENE 01 / POWER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

Power Distribution Systems

Safe, reliable on-set power for film and TV production in New Zealand.

Scroll

Power distribution systems safely route electrical current from generators or mains sources to lighting, camera, and production equipment across a set. Professional distro boxes, cable runs, and breaker panels ensure balanced loads, proper grounding, and safe power delivery to every department.

We provide power distribution systems configured for your production's electrical requirements and set layout. Our team coordinates with your gaffer and best boy to ensure the right capacity, cable lengths, and safety equipment are in place for every location on your schedule.

230V/50Hz NZ-Spec Distro With Vector Energy & Wellington Electricity Tie-Ins

Here is how this works in practice. Power distribution across Aotearoa runs on 230V/50Hz grid spec — matching Australian and UK standards, with Type I plugs distinct from rest-of-world hardware — meaning North American 120V/60Hz cinema gear (incoming with US producers and DPs) routes through dedicated step-down transformer banks plus Hz-conversion stages we factor into the gear list at prep. Generator stock comes through Aggreko NZ, Cummins NZ, and Caterpillar NZ in 20kVA, 60kVA, 125kVA, and 250kVA Stage 5-rated quiet-run units.

Here is how this works in practice. Mains tie-ins set up with Vector Energy in Auckland and Wellington Electricity in the capital, with Powerco covering Taranaki and central North Island. Distro panels, cable runs, banded looms, and Bates/Cam-lok connectors source through Panavision The capital, Panavision Auckland, Lemac New Zealand, Mediatech NZ, and Filmworx Auckland, with the Wellywood gear pool at Stone Street Studios, Park Road Post, and Weta FX Miramar supplementing for feature-scale builds.

Here is the short of it. DOC permits cover generator placement and noise emissions in national parks — Fiordland, Tongariro (LOTR Mt. Doom aerials), Aoraki/Mt. Cook, Westland Tai Poutini, and the Mackenzie Country UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve — with strict night-noise limits and fuel-spill containment mandatory. WorkSafe NZ Electrical (Safety) Rules 2010 need licensed NZ-registered electricians on any distro install above 10A. ACC universal accident insurance covers all on-set incidents under the no-fault scheme.

Here is the short of it. Heritage feature power deployments running through this infrastructure include the LOTR trilogy (Caterpillar generator banks at Stone Street, 2001-2003), The Hobbit cycle, King Kong 2005, Avatar Way of Water (Kumeu Film Studios + Manukau performance capture power load, 2017-2022), and Rings of Power (Amazon Prime Auckland-based concurrent multi-unit generator banks). Iwi liaison under Te Tiriti o Waitangi applies to any rigging on culturally tapu ground.

FAQ

Power Distribution Expertise

What generator sizes do you provide?

We supply generators from 20kVA to 500kVA including super-silent units for sound-sensitive shoots. Multi-generator setups for larger power requirements. Battery hybrid systems and tow plant units for various location needs.

How do you calculate power requirements?

We perform detailed load calculations based on your lighting package, camera and DIT requirements, video village, and all other electrical needs. We factor in startup loads and provide appropriate headroom for safe, reliable operation.

Can you provide power at historic locations?

Yes, we specialize in powering shoots at New Zealand's historic heritage buildings, Maori cultural sites, and protected natural environments. We coordinate with venue requirements, provide appropriate cabling without damage, and ensure compliance with preservation guidelines.

Do you handle tie-ins to venue power?

We coordinate tie-ins to venue electrical systems where appropriate, working with licensed New Zealand electricians and venue technical staff. We assess available power, arrange temporary connections, and ensure safe disconnection after your shoot.

What about power for remote locations?

For remote exteriors without mains power, we provide complete generator solutions including fuel management, noise mitigation, and multi-day operation. We plan logistics to ensure uninterrupted power throughout your shoot.

How do you ensure electrical safety on set?

All equipment is PAT tested and properly rated. We use RCD protection throughout, employ licensed electricians, and follow New Zealand electrical regulations. Detailed documentation and safety briefings ensure crew awareness.
