Storyboard Artist Services
Visual pre-production powered by New Zealand's world-class VFX industry and indigenous Māori art traditions.
A storyboard artist translates a screenplay into sequential visual panels that map out camera angles, compositions, and scene blocking before filming begins. New Zealand's storyboard artists benefit from the country's globally renowned VFX and post-production industry, anchored by Weta Workshop and Park Road Post. This ecosystem, combined with the distinctive visual traditions of Māori art and New Zealand's breathtaking natural landscapes, produces artists with both technical production expertise and a unique creative perspective.
NeedAFixer connects you with New Zealand storyboard artists who understand the demands of both intimate local productions and massive international projects. Whether your project is filming in Wellington, across the Southern Alps, at Auckland studios, or in Queenstown and Fiordland, our network provides professionals experienced in features, VFX-heavy sequences, commercials, and international co-productions.

Weta Workshop conceptual lineage — LOTR pre-visualisation, Hobbit, Avatar storyboard pipelines
Here is how this works in practice. Our storyboard artists work in 2D digital (Storyboard Pro, Photoshop CC, Procreate, Affinity Designer) and 3D pre-visualisation (Unreal Engine 5, Autodesk Maya, Blender, ShotGrid) from Wellington (Stone Street Studios, Weta Workshop, Park Road Post adjacent) and Auckland (Auckland Film Studios, Henderson) bases. Productions ship boards as PDF, animatic edits with Plan 9 / library-temp scoring, and Unreal-Engine-driven previs scenes integrated with the director's blocking and DP's camera language.
Here is how this works in practice. We set up with directors from the Jackson, Campion, Waititi, Cameron, and Caro pipelines and DPs including Ari Wegner ACS, Aaron Morton, John Toon, and Stuart Dryburgh on camera blocking, lens-choice planning, and crowd-movement choreography. Boards are version-controlled in pix.in / Frame.io / Avid Stage Manager with secure access for global director / producer joint work. SPADA contracts cover engagements. DEGNZ membership applies for directing-team-attached storyboard work. NZSPG 25 percent grant covers qualifying pre-production spend.
Here is the short of it. Heritage runs through Weta Workshop's conceptual design and pre-visualisation work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy (Return of the King 2003 Best Picture sweep and Best Director Oscar to Peter Jackson), the Hobbit trilogy, King Kong 2005, Mortal Engines, Avatar: The Way of Water (Best Visual Effects Oscar 2023), and Rings of Power. The Wellington concept-art and previs bench feeding directly into Wētā FX visual effects is the deepest Southern Hemisphere previs concentration. Pacific and Māori storyboard work runs cultural-advisor sign-off on whakapapa-major sequences, with tikanga-compliant pounamu / kahu huruhuru / taiaha / marae interior imagery documented for iwi review. NZWG / DEGNZ contracts cover engagements. ACC universal accident cover protects all storyboard-department crew. Privacy Act 2020 governs all pre-release board confidentiality. GST 15 percent applies on NZD invoicing.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How does New Zealand's VFX industry benefit storyboarding?
New Zealand's VFX industry, led by Weta Workshop and Weta FX, has created an ecosystem of concept artists and visual storytellers with experience on the world's biggest productions. Storyboard artists from this community understand VFX pipeline requirements and can create boards that effectively communicate complex effects sequences.
Can your artists support international productions filming in New Zealand?
Yes. New Zealand regularly hosts major international productions supported by the NZ Screen Production Grant. Our storyboard artists are experienced with these production workflows and communicate fluently in English, providing seamless integration with international teams.
How do you handle extreme landscape storyboarding?
New Zealand's filming locations range from glaciers and fiords to volcanic plateaus and rainforest. Our artists incorporate location-specific reference material into their boards, helping directors plan compositions that capture the drama of these natural settings while accounting for the logistical challenges of remote filming.
What about animation and pre-viz for VFX-heavy sequences?
Our artists specialize in storyboarding VFX-heavy sequences, creating detailed boards and animatics that clearly communicate CG integration points, virtual environment layouts, and creature animation requirements to VFX supervisors and production teams.
