Auckland and Wellington motion design — broadcast, OTT, brand, and feature title-sequence pipelines

Here is how this works in practice. Our motion graphics designers ship broadcast packages for TVNZ, Three, Sky NZ, Maori Television, and Whakaata Māori, OTT campaigns for Netflix NZ, Disney+, Prime Video, and Neon (Sky), brand-sites work for Air New Zealand, ASB, ANZ, Spark, Vodafone NZ, Auckland Unlimited, ChristchurchNZ, and Tourism The country's 100% Pure campaign, and feature title sequences finished at Park Road Post and Department of Post Wellington.

Here is how this works in practice. Pipelines run Adobe After Effects, Cinema 4D, Houdini, Maxon Redshift, OctaneRender, Nuke, Resolve Fusion, and Unreal Engine 5 with full ACES-managed colour to Park Road's DCP and IMF deliverables. We set up with Wētā FX (Unity-owned since 2021) for feature title work that overlaps with the VFX pipeline and with Plan 9 composers (David Long, Janet Roddick, Steve Roche, Sam Yui — Mortal Engines score) for music-synced title sequences. Productions invoice NZD with GST 15 percent, NZSPG 25 percent grant offsets qualifying post spend, and reciprocal IATSE local 800 / 839 / 850 plan apply for US co-pros.

Here is the short of it. Heritage runs through Wētā FX's title-sequence and broadcast-package work on the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Mortal Engines — the same Wellington VFX bench feeding motion-design output. Pacific and Māori motion work covers Te Reo Māori typography (with Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori orthographic conventions), Pacific language type (Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islands Māori, Niuean), and NZ Sign Language motion infographic standards. Iwi consultation is mandatory for taonga or whakapapa-major motion content, with tikanga-compliant pounamu/kahu huruhuru/taiaha imagery sign-off documented in writing. DEGNZ and SPADA contracts cover engagements. ACC universal accident cover protects all motion-department crew. Privacy Act 2020 governs all client and talent imagery in motion sequences.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a motion graphics designer do?

A motion graphics designer creates animated visual elements for film, television, and digital media. This includes title sequences, lower thirds, infographics, animated logos, transitions, and any graphic element that involves movement. In New Zealand, many motion designers have worked at or alongside Weta FX, bringing feature-film VFX experience to projects of all scales.

What skills should a motion graphics designer have?

A motion graphics designer needs a strong foundation in graphic design, typography, and color theory, combined with expertise in animation and compositing. New Zealand designers are typically proficient in Nuke, Houdini, After Effects, and Cinema 4D, with many having trained through Weta's pipeline or New Zealand film school programs.

What types of productions need a motion graphics designer?

Commercials, corporate videos, documentaries, broadcast television, title sequences, and digital campaigns regularly require motion graphics. New Zealand's international feature productions, domestic content for TVNZ, and growing streaming market create ongoing demand for motion design talent.

How do you match a motion graphics designer to my production?

We review your project's style references, brand guidelines, and the specific types of graphics needed, then recommend designers from our New Zealand network whose portfolios demonstrate relevant experience. Wellington is the primary VFX hub, with additional production capabilities in Auckland, Queenstown, and Christchurch.
