SCENE 01 / GREEN SCREEN
Green Screen Services
Professional chroma key filming for VFX and compositing across New Zealand.
Here is how this works in practice. Green screen filming uses chroma key backdrops to isolate subjects for compositing against virtual backgrounds, environments, or visual effects in post-prod. This technique is fundamental to modern filmmaking. New Zealand—home to Stone Street Studios (Avatar, Lord of the Rings), Weta FX, Peter Jackson's Park Road Post, and the NZSPG's up to 40% rebates—is a global leader in chroma key work backed by Oscar-winning VFX talent.
Here is the short of it. We set up green screen setups at Stone Street Studios in Wellington (15,000m² across many stages), Avalon Studios in Wellington, Auckland Film Studios, and Kumeu Film Studios (5 stages). Our team sources cyclorama stages, portable backdrops, and the specialized lighting needed for clean chroma key extraction, with direct handoff to Weta FX (Avatar, LOTR, Planet of the Apes), Park Road Post, Images & Sound, and The Lab for Dolby Atmos, full 4K/HDR workflows, and Oscar-caliber compositing.

Green Screen Stages and VFX Plate Capture in NZ
Here is how this works in practice. Our green screen capacity in New Zealand is anchored by the Wellywood production tricky. Stone Street Studios in Miramar (Peter Jackson's flagship site), Park Road Post, Avalon Studios in Lower Hutt, Wellington Film Studio — and the Auckland cluster including Kumeu Film Studios (the Avatar 2/3 production hub built specifically for James Cameron's pipeline), Auckland Film Studios, and Henderson Studios.
Here is how this works in practice. Standard green screen plates use ARRI Alexa Mini LF or 35, Sony Venice 2, RED V-Raptor at 8K, with ARRI SkyPanel S60 / S360 backlight, Aputure Nova P600c side fill, and 6K-13K HMI key. Witness camera tracking for VFX delivery uses Ncam, Mo-Sys StarTracker, and Stype RedSpy markered systems, with LiDAR scanning via Faro X130 / Leica RTC360 for set reconstruction. Our compositors and VFX supervisors are drawn from the Weta FX / Weta Digital pipeline (Manuka renderer heritage). Ongoing work flows through Rings of Power, Avatar 3 / 4 / 5 pickups, and continuing Marvel shoots.
Here is the short of it. The country's green-screen VFX heritage is among the world's deepest: Andrew Lesnie's LOTR cinematography won Best Cinematography Oscar (2002), Weta won Best Visual Effects for The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, King Kong, Avatar (2009), and Avatar Way of Water (2023). Park Road Post and Stone Street stay primary delivery facilities for Marvel, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV+.
Here is the short of it. We set up NZSPG 20% + 5% productivity uplift records plus the extra 5% NZ-content post-prod uplift through the New Zealand Film Commission (Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga), with WorkSafe NZ studio compliance, ACC universal accident insurance, MEAA-Equity NZ credentialing, and Manatū Taonga (Ministry of Culture & Heritage) liaison built into projects involving te reo Māori or iwi-major material captured on the green screen stage.
FAQ
Chroma Key Expertise
Do you provide green screen studios?
Here is the breakdown. Yes, we partner with Stone Street Studios in Wellington (15,000m² across many stages, home of Avatar and LOTR), Avalon Studios, Auckland Film Studios, and Kumeu Film Studios (5 stages)—from interview setups to massive cyclorama stages for VFX-heavy shoots.
Can you set up green screens on location?
Yes, we give portable green screen solutions including pop-up backgrounds, fabric screens, and mobile lighting packages. We can create chroma key setups in almost any New Zealand location with proper space and power.
What about blue screen vs green screen?
We work with both green and blue screens based on your needs. Blue screen is often preferred for blonde hair or scenes with green elements. We advise based on your specific compositing needs and VFX pipeline.
How do you ensure clean keys?
Clean keys need even lighting on the background, proper separation from talent, spill control, and attention to edge quality. Our teams bring extensive Weta-adjacent experience to each chroma key setup.
Do you coordinate with VFX supervisors?
Here is what that looks like on the ground. Yes, we work closely with your VFX team—in-house or at New Zealand facilities like Weta FX, Park Road Post, Images & Sound, or The Lab—to capture tracking markers, reference photography, HDRIs, and clean plates.
What resolution and formats do you support?
We shoot green screen in formats up to 8K based on camera selection. We make sure footage meets the resolution and codec needs of your post-prod pipeline with full 4K/HDR workflows and Dolby Atmos ready.
