LTO-9 tape, AWS Auckland sovereign storage, and Ngā Taonga national archive integration
Here is how this works in practice. We design archive preservation pipelines anchored on LTO-9 tape (18 TB native, 45 TB compressed per cartridge) with redundant offsite duplication, and on Privacy Act 2020-compliant sovereign cloud. AWS Asia Pacific (Auckland) Region opened 2024 and Microsoft Azure New Zealand North (Auckland) opened 2025 — for active-archive use cases. Google Cloud has no NZ region and routes via Sydney. This is acceptable for non-personal-data archives but inappropriate for content under strict Privacy Act residency expectations.
Here is how this works in practice. Standard archive masters have camera-first ARRIRAW, REDCODE R3D, Sony X-OCN, and Canon CRM, plus DPX, Open EXR (ACES AP0), and ProRes 4444 XQ mezzanines. Audio archives capture Pro Tools session files alongside BWF stems. Park Road Post Wellington holds archive masters for major shoots including Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, King Kong, Avatar, Mortal Engines, and Power of the Dog under contractual long-term storage agreements with rightsholders.
Here is the short of it. Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision — formed in the 2014 merger of NZ's three previous AV archives — is the national archive of record for NZ moving image and sound. We set up deposit, restoration, and access workflows for shoots seeking national-archive status. Iwi consultation under tikanga governs taonga material, above all recordings of kaumātua, classic taonga puoro performances, and culturally sensitive marae material. Kaitiaki keep ongoing rights of access and use under Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership principles. The Privacy Act 2020 and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner govern personal voice and likeness data in long-term archives. Cross-border archive copies mostly sit in Sydney AWS or Equinix Sydney facilities for disaster-recovery range. GST 15 percent, NZD invoicing, ACC universal cover, and zero capital gains tax apply.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is LTO tape archiving?
Here is the breakdown. LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is the industry standard for long-term media archiving. LTO tapes give top longevity (30+ years), high capacity, and low cost per terabyte. We use LTFS (Linear Tape File System) which makes tapes as easy to use as hard drives while giving the security gains of offline storage.
How do you ensure data integrity over time?
Here is what that looks like on the ground. We implement many safeguards including checksum verification at each stage, redundant copies stored in different locations, site-level tracking of storage facilities, and regular integrity checks. Our systems automatically flag any issues so they can be addressed before data loss occurs.
What happens when formats become obsolete?
Here is how the picture comes together. We proactively monitor format lifecycles and plan migrations before obsolescence becomes key. Our preservation strategy has keeping access to legacy playback systems and systematically migrating content to today's formats when appropriate, making sure your content stays easy to reach no matter technology changes.
Can you help organize and catalog existing archives?
Here is what we have to work with. Yes, we give complete digital asset management services including cataloging existing archives, creating searchable metadata databases, and implementing MAM systems. We can help transform disorganized media libraries into well-structured, easily easy to reach archives with full search skills.
