Here is how this works in practice. Sound design creates the complete sonic world of a production through the selection, creation, and layering of audio elements. Sound designers craft atmospheric textures, impact effects, transitions, and site-level soundscapes that immerse audiences in the story's world and heighten the emotional impact of each scene.

Here is the short of it. We connect you with sound designers who bring creative vision and tech expertise to your project's audio landscape. Our team sets up the sound design process from first spotting sessions through final delivery, making sure your production's sonic identity is distinctive, immersive, and emotionally compelling.

Department of Post and Park Road sound designers behind LOTR-era spectacle

Here is how this works in practice. We book sound design through Department of Post Wellington and Park Road Post, the studios responsible for the sonic worlds of Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, King Kong, Avatar: The Way of Water, District 9, Mortal Engines, The Power of the Dog, and Rings of Power. Sound design sessions run Pro Tools HDX, Nuendo for hybrid scoring-and-design work, Native Instruments Kontakt and Spitfire libraries for tonal beds, and field-recording libraries that have native NZ wildlife — kiwi, kea, ruru, tui — alongside Park Road's proprietary creature-sound archives built across two decades of Jackson shoots. Native Audio The capital and Imagezoo Auckland deliver project-scaled sessions for shorter-form work. Output stems lock to 5.1 surround, 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos, and stereo masters with ITU-R BS.775 tracking. We deliver against Netflix, Apple TV+ Atmos, Amazon HDR10+, HLG broadcast, and AS-11 specs for TVNZ and Three.

Here is the short of it. Wellington's sound design lineage runs back through the Lord of the Rings finishing campaigns that yielded the Return of the King 2003 Sound Editing and Sound Mixing Oscars. The creative trail across the Hobbit trilogy, King Kong (2005, Best Visual Effects Oscar), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022, Best Visual Effects Oscar) keeps the city at the front of global sound design. Plan 9 collective composer-designers extended that practice on Jackson shoots. Taonga puoro sources — pūtātara, kōauau, taonga pūoro flutes — feed sound design for shoots involving te reo Māori narrative. Iwi and kaitiaki consultation governs use under tikanga. Cross-border joint work with Skywalker Sound (Cameron shoots) and Sydney's Soundfirm extends our reach. NZD invoicing, GST 15 percent, ACC universal accident cover, and Privacy Act 2020 stem-handling apply.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sound design and why is it important?

Here is the breakdown. Sound design is the creative process of developing audio elements that don't exist in production recordings - from ambient atmospheres and site-level sounds to fantastical effects and creature voices. Great sound design makes worlds believable, boosts emotion, and creates memorable cinematic moments that audiences feel as much as hear.

Do you create original sounds or use libraries?

Here is what that looks like on the ground. We combine both ways. Our sound designers create original recordings and synthesized sounds for unique elements that define your production, while also using premium sound libraries for efficiency. Each project gets a customized sonic palette that serves its specific creative needs.

Can you design sounds for specific genres like sci-fi or horror?

Here is how the picture comes together. Fully. Our team has extensive experience across all genres including science fiction, horror, fantasy, action, drama, and documentary. We know the sonic conventions and audience expectations of each genre while bringing fresh creative perspectives to each project.

How do you work with directors and editors?

We work closely across the process. We mostly start with spotting sessions to know your vision, give works-in-progress for feedback, and refine sounds based on your direction. We can work with picture lock or accommodate editorial changes as your project evolves.

Productions in New Zealand that need this often pair it with Foley Recording Services, Dialogue Editing & ADR Services, and 5.1 Surround Mixing Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Interview & Dialogue Editing and Color Grading Services.
